Richard Thomas has stepped down as Chair of the Board of Trustees, having played a significant role in the charity since its beginnings in 2001.
Richard was one of a small number of Trustees who helped establish Farm Cornwall and, over the following 25 years, has provided leadership, continuity and an unwavering commitment to supporting Cornwall’s farming community.
In the charity’s earliest days, Richard was instrumental in appointing its first Business Advisor, John Forster. At the time, the concept of providing farmers with free, independent farm business advice was relatively untested. Richard often recalls that nobody quite knew how the idea would work, and that it was a case of turning John out into the “field” and letting him get on with it.
Those early years also saw Richard help establish the “Deliciously Dirty” potato marketing project, which aimed to promote the early potatoes grown in West Cornwall.
As the organisation developed, Richard continued to play a significant role in shaping its work. In 2012, he was instrumental in the appointment of Edward Richardson as John Forster’s successor, helping to ensure continuity in the practical, one-to-one support offered to farming families across Cornwall.
Richard’s contribution extends far beyond his time as Chair. His knowledge of the agricultural sector, experience as a farmer and long-standing understanding of the organisation have helped guide the charity through periods of considerable change in both farming and the wider rural community.
Although stepping down as Chair, Richard will remain an active member of the Board of Trustees and a strong advocate for its work. We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy and leadership he has given over the past 25 years and are delighted that his knowledge and experience will remain part of the organisation.
Taking over as Chair is Chris Knowles, who has been closely involved with the charity for more than 20 years, having joined in 2005.
Chris manages Trink Farm near St Ives, a family-run dairy farm which he operates alongside a dedicated farm team. Together with his wife Rachel, who manages the dairy and office, the family also processes and sells its own fresh milk. As an active dairy farmer, Chris brings extensive first-hand experience of running a modern farming business and a strong understanding of the opportunities and pressures facing farming families.
Chris also brings a wealth of experience from his involvement with farming and community organisations across Cornwall and the South West. He has been actively involved with Young Farmers, including serving as South West Area Chairman, and was a governor at Nancledra Primary School before becoming Chair of Governors. He has also served as Chair of Towednack Parish Council.
During more than two decades with Farm Cornwall, Chris has seen both the organisation and the challenges facing farming families change considerably. His extensive farming experience, long-standing knowledge of the charity and strong connections within the agricultural community will be invaluable as he takes on the role of Chair.
Chris steps into the position at an important time for the organisation. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we are continuing to develop our services, strengthen partnerships and ensure we are well placed to respond to the changing needs and challenges facing farming families across Cornwall.
Richard’s contribution over the past 25 years has helped the charity grow from an innovative idea in West Cornwall into a well-established organisation supporting farming families across the county. As Chris takes on the role of Chair, we look forward to building on those strong foundations and continuing our commitment to providing practical, confidential support to farming families when they need it most.
