We take health amongst the farming community very seriously, and recognise that the farming industry can be incredibly tough and take its toll on many. We are there to support those who are feeling overwhelmed and struggling to cope; the sooner problems are shared the quicker they can be addressed. Isolation, money worries, succession, fall outs, bad weather, disease and rocketing prices are just some of the issues and very often it is a combination of things that can create a build up of worry and stress. Depression and isolation are something that we come across often, and we are here to listen and support.
We have a very good network of support agencies in Cornwall to provide specific advice, and trained mental health practitioners too. Farm Cornwall advisers are ASIST trained (how to recognise and intervene when people are at risk of suicide) and no problem is too great to share.
We encourage those in the industry to look out for each other, and have run many successful events where farmers are able to come together and talk – for some, just getting off the farm for a few hours can do the world of good. We provide additional support for those who are unable to leave the farm, either through illness, disability, family ties, or lack of confidence to do so.
