Join us for a farm walk at Downs Farm, kindly hosted by Rob Monk, with thanks to Pete and Di Wastenage for their kind permission.

Time: 11:00am – 2:00pm

Downs Farm is home to a spring block-calving herd of 300 cows, managed on a rotational grazing system that relies heavily on grazed grass, with fodder beet used at the shoulders of the grazing season. The farm extends to 270 acres, with additional land rented to produce winter silage, and forms part of a wider dairy business with other dairy units based in Devon.

Tenant farmers from across Cornwall and the South West are invited to a free open evening meeting with Alan Laidlaw, Commissioner for the Tenant Farming Sector, during his visit to Cornwall.

The meeting will take place from 7:00pm to 9:30pm.

The meeting offers a valuable opportunity for tenant farmers to hear directly from the Commissioner, share their experiences openly and ensure that the realities of life in the tenanted sector across the region are heard.

With tenant farmers facing a range of pressures, including cash flow, security of tenure and rent disputes, the evening will provide an opportunity to discuss both the challenges facing the sector and examples of positive landlord and tenant relationships.

Alan Laidlaw said:

“I am looking forward to visiting Cornwall at the end of September and meeting local farmers and organisations connected to the tenant farming sector. This is a brilliant opportunity for me and my office to hear about the opportunities and challenges facing the region from those whose knowledge and experience are so important in shaping a thriving rural economy in the region.”

The event is delivered in association with DEFRA and is free to attend. Advance booking is essential as places are limited. Tea and coffee will be available during the evening.
