In July Farm Cornwall attended the Cornwall Business Fair, organised by the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, where we came across the Cornwall team for the Living Wage Foundation. As it happens the week before Trustees had approved our application to become accredited as a Living Wage Employer and we are really pleased to be part of the story bringing the Cornwall Living Wage Place action plan to life. Farm Cornwall can announce that our application has been approved and the charity is now accredited.
Morally this might feel a but tricky, given many of the farm business owners and farm workers who we support are struggling to achieve anything like the living wage. As self-employed businesses, they rely on their profits to pay themselves and their workers like any other trade. Recent findings show that farmers often have no financial buffer should they suddenly lose some of their farm income due to situations which are often out of their control. We also know that so many farmers also have extra jobs off farm to help make ends meet.
With many farm incomes forecast to gradually decline over coming years, it is important that worried farmers who are struggling or who fear they might be soon, get in touch with us to seek help and support.
