Would you like some help with computers? Here at the Farm Business Centre we can offer one to one sessions with an IT expert to help you, whatever your computer needs. You can either bring along your own laptop or use our equipment. Here are some examples of what we might be able to help you with;

Is it possible to finish your most forward steers off grass, with high feed and bedding costs remaining high it might make sense to finish them off grass with a bit of supplementry feed at key points particularly as grass dries up in the early summer or towards the end of the summer. It might be the carcass is lightly smaller but overall the margin was better

Dairy

We have seen a recent milk price rise for September from both Dairy Crest (Davidstow) and Milklink for a standard litre

There still needs to be movement to cover the cost of production and allow investment. For those farmers affected by NVZ where investment is required to stay in production, any indicators of milk price rise are desperately needed if they are to go a head with that investment.

Potatoes

Potatoes are rapidly being planted, I would just like to remind those of you covering crops with plastic we have arranged with Solway recycling a free collection of plastic once it comes off the crop. It needs to be in single pickup points of 25 tonnes as clean as possible. Please let me know if you are interested

Cauliflowers

Cauliflower crops are being harvested as normal and trade is 41p . A report from the Fruit Produce Journal would indicate a drop in sales of all veg of 1.5% across all sectors. Sales over Christmas due to the mild weather have shifted from the traditional winter warmer vegetables to salads. Consumers are also looking to value products and added value products. Produce in the middle that doesn’t fit into those catagories is losing out .

Daffodils

The season started 4 weeks late – the latest start for 10 years, they had a record February in terms of speed of crop and volumes, but this resulted very quickly in a crash in the export price.

March continued at a very fast pace and they were at the end of it two weeks ahead of last year – having seen the Lincolnshire crop come and go and Scotland almost at an end.

The UK market was strong and was taking an increasing share of the market crop.

The actual flower crop has suffered from the warm, dry conditions, causing some varieties to split open prematurely short and often very light weight bunches and this combined with the export crash in February has resulted in some spectacular displays of colour in the county.

There have been several major out breaks of fungal disease in the crop which has caused some concern as to the efficacy of some of the fungicides that we currently use, because the prevailing weather conditions have not been conducive to this particular disease.

Most growers are now scaling down cropping as the season comes to an end and are starting to prepare for bulb lifting & harvesting towards the end of May.

Land

Growers are offering between £200 & £250 per acre per annum on a share farm basis, depending on how far away the ground is from the base farm. With the farmer keeping the SFP, farmer involvement in the share agreement could be ploughing, hedgetrimming, spraying etc and the farmer would be paid for this . Growers are looking for land this year and for next.
